What Should You Do To When Your Child Is Hyperactive? Behavioral Treatment For Sensory Craving

One of the most common symptoms of children with ADHD is they cannot sit in the same place even in a short period of time. You can easily catch the kid running, jumping, climbing when he has a chance. In most cases, parents will do the easiest thing is scolding, require the kid to stop immediately. Sadly, many parents find spanking is the best method to cool the kid down. In fact, scolding, spanking are the worst method and it will not bring any good long term effect. There is a better, easier way to deal with the sensory craving problem in kids with ADHD.

Does the kid with ADHD really want to be “annoying?”

While the kid appears to enjoy his hyperactivity, researches have shown that in most case, though they are conscious about their problem, they are unable to stop. The sensory craving problem forces the kids to move around. They even don’t understand why they do that and as mentioned above, even when they don’t want, the problem urges them to move. In these cases, punishing will not do anything good.

How to deal with hyperactivity in children with ADHD by using behavioral therapy

As I mentioned in the beginning of the post, the method to manage hyperactivity in ADHD kids is very simple. The real problem with these kids is they are not “bad” but in most case, they cannot sense and see they are causing the problem. Teaching the children how to regulate their actions is the key to control hyperactivity.

Playing Drum Can Help Kids Regulate Behaviors

The most common way to teach regulate their action is by playing game with them in different frequency. Take the drum playing as an example. Initially, as the kids really want to go fast, let them do it. You, as a play mate, will suggest to slow down a little and a little and a little more until the game reach slow pace then super slow pace. After that, you will suggest the kid to increase the pace from super slow to super-fast. In the course of training, don’t forget to ask the child how he/she is feeling. This is very important because it will help the kid sense his/her pace and learn how to regulate his/her action.

The principle of the behavioral therapy is very simple but it does require a lot of time to implement. You cannot expect after one or two hours, the kids will learn how to regulate their behavior and become “normal”. The training course can last for a month, even two but the results have been proven to be very rewarding.
