Children with ADHD are usually described as “problematic” an most of the time rejected by their peers. Feeling they are not a part of the community make the problem even worse. The children now believe that everyone against them so defiant, uncontrollable behaviors are very likely expected. This is where the social skills group therapy comes into play. This therapy helps the children feel they are not rejected but instead, a part of the society.
This therapy involves in gathering children with ADHD at the similar ages (usually from 5 to 8 and from 9 to 12 years old). When the child lives in an environment which has children who have the same problem as he does, he knows that he’s not the only one struggle with the problem. Even a normal person will feel comfortable at a party when he knows that there are some acquaintances he can talk to, right? The social skills group therapy brings the feeling of belonging and acceptance to the kids.
The social skills group therapy also teaches the children the necessary skills to be a part of the community. It is also a good place for the kids to be their true selves because surround them are kids which have exact problem like them and adult – who understand what do they feel and what are their problems. Through the training and games played during the course, the kids will learn what to do to get accepted. They also gain a even more valuable thing, that is the confidence when moving back to the real world.
